What comes to mind when you think about adoption?
There’s a lot of outdated information about adoption in our culture that can lead many to dismiss it as a pregnancy option at first. For many, the idea of giving birth to their child and then placing them with another family can seem too emotionally painful, especially when misconceptions skew the idea of what adoption looks like.
That’s completely understandable. But you might be encouraged to know that adoption today doesn’t always look the way people imagine. You might be surprised to learn that a birth mother typically has many choices throughout the process, including the ability to:
Select the family
Choose whether or not they have an active role in their child’s life
Have tangible support throughout the entire process
In this blog, we’ll tackle some misconceptions about adoption we often hear and what adoption actually looks like for most birth parents today.

Myth #1: “Adoption means putting my child into the foster care system.”
Fact: Adoption and foster care are not the same.
Foster care is typically used when a child is removed from their home for safety reasons and placements are arranged by Child Protective Services. Adoption, on the other hand, is for parents who want to find a permanent loving home for their children but don’t feel equipped, for many complex reasons, to provide it. This can be a voluntary process by the biological parents, and they may have voice and choice in which family their child is placed with.
Myth #2: “Once I make an adoption plan, I can’t change my mind.”
Fact: In Michigan, you can change your mind, even after birth.
Even if you’ve made an adoption plan or chosen a family, you can decide to parent your baby at any point before signing legal consent after birth.
Myth #3: “A stranger will raise my child, and I’ll never see or hear from my child again.”
Fact: In most private, voluntary adoptions today, birth parents can choose the adoptive family.
Many adoptions are open or semi-open, allowing ongoing connection based on what everyone agrees to. Learn more about open adoption →
Myth #4: “Adoption is expensive and complicated.”
Fact: Medical bills and adoption agency expenses are often covered.
Expenses are often covered by the adoptive parents or other programs, not the birth parents. Adoption agencies usually handle the legal and logistical complexities.
Myth #5: “Adoption means I’m giving up, or don’t care about my child.”
Fact: Adoption is a loving and meaningful option.
Adoption allows one the opportunity to make an intentional plan for their child’s life and wellbeing, and to play a role in shaping their child’s future. It is an unselfish act of love, placing the needs of a child above the wants and needs of a parent.
