Your Rights Before an Abortion in Michigan: What You Should Know
If you're facing an unplanned pregnancy, you might be feeling a lot of things at once: fear, pressure, overwhelm, or maybe even like this decision has already been made for you, by your circumstances or by someone else's expectations. If that's where you're at, we want you to know: you're not alone, and this is still more in your hands than it might feel right now.
You have real, legal rights in this decision, and in the process. In this blog, we'll walk through 5 of these rights with you, not as a checklist you have to follow, but as reminders that you matter, your story matters, and you're allowed to walk this journey at your own pace.
Note: We specialize in pregnancy confirmation (testing, ultrasounds, and options information) and we don't perform or refer for abortions. Whatever options you're leaning towards, you're welcome here!
Let’s start with your first right:
1. You have the right to understand your pregnancy
A positive pregnancy test doesn't tell you everything you need to know. Is the pregnancy viable? Is it ectopic? How far along are you? A confirmation ultrasound can answer all three, and it's worth having that clarity no matter what options you're considering. Knowing what's going on inside your body can shape your options, your health, and even whether an abortion is medically necessary at all.
If you're considering the abortion pill, gestational age especially matters. The pill is only FDA-approved up to 10 weeks, and an ultrasound is the most accurate way to know exactly how far along you are, since a missed period alone isn't always reliable. You have the right to that information before you decide anything.
We believe this information should come without cost, which is why we offer confirmation ultrasounds at no charge.

2. You have the right to ask questions and take your time
There's no such thing as a silly question! There’s also no rule that says you have to decide everything in one appointment. If you feel rushed by a provider, by your own thoughts, or by the people around you, it's okay to pause, go home, and come back to it. Unless you're facing a medical emergency, you usually have more time than it feels like you do. Taking the time you need now is an investment in your long-term health that's worth making.
If you need a safe place to think out loud, ask questions without judgment, and talk to somebody who will listen without pressuring you, swing by Thrive Medical Clinic for a free options consultation.
3. You have the right to understand your options
Parenting, abortion, and adoption are all real options. Even if some of them feel like a quick "no" right now, it's worth understanding what each could actually look like for you before you rule anything out, and it might surprise you how much support exists for options that currently feel out of reach. If you want a hand getting connected with resources in the Grand Traverse region, an options consultation at Thrive is a great way to find free support that's relevant to you.
Another note: many people know that abortion is legal in Michigan, but many don't know that Michigan also has laws protecting your job and education if you choose to parent or place your child for adoption. If you live in Michigan, you have many legal rights related to all your pregnancy options!
4. You have the right to advocate for your own care
Not every provider offers the same level of care before or after an abortion. It's okay to ask questions of any provider before you commit to an appointment, or before you take any abortion medication you receive. This is important to make sure you receive the care your body needs. Here are a few questions worth asking your abortion provider:
What are your credentials, and who will actually be performing my procedure?
What's your plan if I have complications, and is there someone I can reach afterward?
Will I need a follow-up visit, and is that included?
Can I change my mind at any point, even after I've started?
Asking doesn't make you difficult or “too much.” It makes you informed, and you’re worthy of that!
5. You have the right to make a decision that's yours
This is so important, and it can also be the hardest to feel in real life. Pressures—real and perceived—can come from so many places, making it feel as though the decision isn’t really your own.
If you're wondering whether you're being pressured or coerced into an abortion decision, or if someone you love is pushing you toward a decision you’re not comfortable with, that doesn't mean you're powerless. If you're in that spot, know this: you don't have to sort it out alone, and you don't have to have the perfect words for it yet. A safe, neutral person to talk to—a friend, a counselor, or an options consultation at Thrive—can help you find some clarity, calm, and solid ground, even if the situation stays complicated for a while.
Remember: the decision is yours from start to finish. You're allowed to walk out of an appointment or hold off on a decision if you feel pressured or unsure. In Michigan, pregnancy decisions legally belong to the woman, and abortion coercion is illegal.
Also, feeling pressured is different from feeling unsafe. If you don’t feel safe in your situation, reach out to someone you trust, or seek help from local emergency services if you're in immediate danger.
You matter
No matter what you decide, you deserve care, clarity, and the space you need to get there. If you'd like a safe place to ask questions, get a free confirmation ultrasound, or just think out loud with someone who isn't going to pressure or judge you, we're here for you.
Your questions matter. Your health matters. You matter.
